We’ve all heard the whisper…..indigestion, headache, leg cramp, insomnia, dry skin, backache, neck pain, etc. I could go on and on about how the body whispers soft messages to us. We can ignore them and let the symptoms build until the body screams, or, listen to the whispers and do something about them.
Perhaps you find the whispers annoying. When you hear the whisper or feel the niggle do you think, ‘I don’t have time to make an appointment with the doctor’ or ‘it’s not really that painful’ or ‘if I just take these tablets and it will be fine’.
Often you get away with not listening – for a time. Maybe a long time. In fact, if you ignore the whispers long enough you stop even being able to hear them anymore. Until one day, you have a bigger problem and your body screams. Listening to those whispers and getting things checked out early might just keep you from having to hear your body scream later.
One thing that Pilates teaches us is to listen to our body’s whispers. It’s important to have a mind-body connection to hear and listen to them. Pilates gives you a moment to still the mind and connect to your body through low impact (high burn) movement. The biggest gift you can give yourself in your Pilates practice is learning how to pay attention to your body.
Notice the niggles, listen to the whispers and follow up with any concerns you may have – before they become screams.
